Licensing

Getting your amateur radio license is easier than you think — no Morse code, no electronics degree. There are three license classes, each a step up in privileges:

  • Technician — the entry-level license. Local repeater and simplex operating, and the starting point for public-service work.
  • General — adds worldwide high-frequency (HF) privileges.
  • Amateur Extra — the top class, with all amateur privileges.

How to Study

Study free at HamStudy.org, which drills you on the actual exam question pool. Club members are happy to help — bring your questions to a meeting.

Taking the Exam

The Club can arrange test sessions, so you can sit the exam with friendly examiners. Email bedfordarc@gmail.com and we’ll point you to the next class or session.

Costs: the exam fee is typically $15, plus a $35 FCC application fee paid to the FCC when your license is granted.
